Details: Chests like this one were often given to the bride to use in her new home. The imagery of cranes, pine plum, bamboo and tortoise are all good luck or longevity symbols.  This chest is unusual in its configuration having three drawers in the top section making it taller than most chests of the region.  The opaque lacquer and family crest indicate this was a samurai class chest.
