CHESTS / BEDDING

Futon dansu (bedding chest) became common in households during the Meiji Period for bedding to be stored during the day. Futon chests are commonly two pieces stacked- a lower chest with drawers for storage, and a large upper chest with sliding doors for storage of large bedding pieces. Sliding door panels provided a wonderful opportunity for craftsmen to showcase wide wood panels with decorative grain.
